Daimaru Matsuzakaya|Hyakuyozu Special Site
A new symbol for Daimaru Matsuzakaya.
Experience the mechanism of an infinitely
changing visual identity, digitally.
“Hyakuyozu,” the new symbol of Daimaru Matsuzakaya. To convey to the fullest the character of this visual identity — created by the Misawa Laboratory of Nippon Design Center (NDC) based on the values Daimaru Matsuzakaya holds dear — we produced a website that lets you experience it as though you were touching paper itself. It extended beyond the website to station signage, TV commercials, and more.

What the Project Aimed For

“Hyakuyozu,” newly created by NDC's Misawa Laboratory, is a dynamic pattern in which five sheets of paper overlap and move, giving rise to infinite patterns. We wondered whether this new visual identity of Daimaru Matsuzakaya could be “experienced” on a website. By making it possible, on the web, to feel as though you were touching and moving the paper yourself, we aimed to let people intuitively sense the character and the infinity that “Hyakuyozu” possesses.
Project Timeline
Duration: 8 months (December 2024 – July 2025)

Point 1 — Aiming for Intuitive Understanding of the Principle of Hyakuyozu
Content Design
What should people feel on the website? Exchanging ideas with the Misawa Laboratory
“Hyakuyozu” is a moving pattern in which five sheets of paper overlap and, with the slightest movement, generate patterns endlessly. We began by considering how to convey that structural fascination on a website. We planned a structure that moves back and forth between the “principle” that serves as Hyakuyozu's material and the “figurative images” that emerge from the overlapping of paper. Without being bound by words, we built an experience that lets people feel Hyakuyozu intuitively. So that, even within a screen you cannot physically touch, you could sense the overlapping of paper, the slippage, and the faint resistance, we thoroughly pursued the physical properties of paper. Furthermore, by incorporating a structure in which random changes occur each time you visit or the page loops, we embodied Hyakuyozu's infinity. We obsessed over every detail — texture, sheer quantity, and more — so that the website could offer an experience beyond even touching real paper.

Point 2 — A Custom WebGL Tool Built to Reproduce the Texture of Paper
WebGL Implementation
Pursuing texture to the very end — the feel of paper, its movement, even its slippage
Pursuing how to make paper feel real on a website, we developed a production tool dedicated to Hyakuyozu. It lets you freely specify the size and color of the paper and the shape and size of the holes, layer and lay them out, and finely set paper-like movement and change as animation. We built a production flow in which the generation of “figurative” patterns, the camera work, and the animation are set within the tool, and the results are reflected on the website in real time. Using this tool, we worked closely with the designers of the Misawa Laboratory who created Hyakuyozu, repeating adjustment and verification and raising the precision of the patterns themselves.
Point 3 — Extending from the Custom Tool to Station Signage and Commercials
Media Expansion
Remaking the web tool into a video-editing tool, then extending to TV commercials and large displays
As part of the Hyakuyozu promotion, we produced TV commercials, TVer commercials, in-store signage, station signage, and more. We worked so that the Hyakuyozu-ness and the paper texture pursued on the website could be conveyed to the fullest in video as well. To confirm how it would look best at actual projection sizes, we carried out verification using a projector. We repeated adjustments to pattern size, text size, and so on, so that the video at each size could accurately convey the intended impression.

It was an honor to be present at a turning point in a history spanning more than 300 years — while feeling tremendous pressure at the same time. The whole team dug in together. Everyone, great work!

Working in lockstep with NDC was truly stimulating and fun. I learned a great deal. By facing the physical properties of paper to the very end, I think we made a site with a uniquely distinctive touch. I'd love for people to touch every corner of it!
