KAI | KAI DESIGN Dept.

Expressing the aesthetics of craftsmanship through “video you can touch.” A site where you experience the feel of a tool by touching it.

To make KAI’s design philosophy widely known, we developed it across a range of media — starting with the web and extending to exhibition signage and newspaper advertising. For the website, we applied interaction-driven direction so that visitors could experience the sharpness, ease of use, and product-level sense of beauty unique to KAI’s products. By expressing it as “video you can touch,” in which users can intervene in the footage, we built a site where the three-dimensional beauty of the products can be experienced as well.

About the Client

KAI Corporation

  • Business

A global cutlery manufacturer based in Seki, Gifu Prefecture — a town famous for blade-making — founded in 1908. It handles a wide range of products including razors and men’s grooming items.

  • Features

Building on the tradition of blade-making cultivated in Seki, Gifu Prefecture, and its advanced metal-processing technology exemplified by blade-sharpening, KAI leverages an integrated in-house manufacturing structure — from development to production — to deliver products that balance functionality and design.

What the Project Aimed For

There was a need for this to contribute not just to individual product design, but to branding for the company as a whole.

Project Timeline

Duration: 1 year 2 months (September 2024 – November 2025)

Point 1 — Defining a Design Philosophy That Expresses KAI’s Aesthetic

Brand Value Definition

Drawing out the aesthetic through repeated factory visits and interviews

Because of the sharpness of its blades and its flagship razors, KAI enjoyed strong recognition — particularly among men — yet awareness of the company among younger people was weak. On top of this, the aesthetics and thinking behind its product design had rarely been communicated to the world.
The aesthetic KAI always holds dear in making things is not surface beauty alone, but being functional and easy to use — together with a posture of continually engaging with even long-loved tools such as kitchen knives and scissors, striving to make them even a little newer and better.
Through visits to the company’s own manufacturing plants and interviews with members of the design department, we organized these aesthetics and values around design. While formulating a main copy and statement as the design philosophy, we also defined the three perspectives that underpin KAI’s design as the “Marks of Beauty.”

Point 2 — Product Direction That Feels Like You’re Actually Touching It

Interaction Direction

Embodying the comfort of using the product and the design thinking behind it

What we aimed for this time was not footage that merely shows products beautifully, but expression that lets you intuitively sense the design thinking and the tactile feel behind them. For that, we chose an interactive video experience that could only exist on the web. We brought on film director Makoto Yabuki of Tangram, with yansu handling video and stills. As a single team — including the art director and engineers — we moved back and forth across the boundary between footage and implementation, fine-tuning the details right up until the site went live.
Rather than producing video simply as a finished film, we built the data with its behavior on the website in mind. At the implementation stage, we used WebGL and Blender to realize an interactive depth-of-field expression. Our aim was an experience where you don’t just look at the site, but feel as though you are touching the products themselves.

Point 3 — Expanding from the Website to Exhibition Signage

Media Expansion

Designing content for every medium with the website at the core

The website we created was also developed across a variety of media. We produced vertical signage footage shown at the venue of KAI’s concept design exhibition, “Sharpness and Gentleness.” While verifying how it should look within the exhibition space, we created it with the same worldview as the website. The design philosophy we developed was also published as an advertisement in the Nikkei newspaper. Signage and newspaper advertising were media that emerged as offshoots over the course of the project; rather than staying confined to the website, we considered the optimal appearance for each medium. Starting from the web, it became an initiative that delivers KAI’s design across media.

Voices from the Makers

Hayashi

It struck me that tools are a mature world. To keep moving forward within it, the posture of “continuing to engage” resonated with me as a fellow maker. My pick is the “SELECT100 Silicone Spoon” — ordinary at first glance, but once you use it, it reaches every spot you didn’t even know was itching. (It isn’t even featured on this site!)

Okabe

Look closely and the kitchen knife and the nail clippers at home both carry the KAI mark. Learning how much ingenuity and passion is poured into products this close to everyday life, my respect simply won’t stop.
