Texture hunt

One day, I was gazing absentmindedly at the scenery by the river. Then some neighborhood kids came and started playing, throwing stones into the water. In the ripples, the shape of the bridge reflected on the surface warped and bent. Before I knew it, I’d taken a video.

It started when I saw Toshiki Okamoto (@tskokmt) — a video artist and also a programmer — posting beautiful scenes like water surfaces and light to his Instagram stories.
“Recording things this way — nice.”
Thinking that, I somehow started shooting too.
And I gave this hard-to-name activity the name “texture hunt.”
I call it a “texture hunt,” but come to think of it, what I’m doing may be closer to snapshot photography.
What I shoot isn’t texture to begin with, nor am I hunting around for anything. It’s just the first thing that came to mind, so that’s what I call it.
Still, I quite like the name.
Because ever since naming it, things like water surfaces, foam, and the flickering of light seem to catch my eye more naturally than before.

Looking back, maybe I’ve always liked such things. I grew up in a new town on top of a mountain, and at university I studied the natural environment. In my student days I joined a farming club and went once a month from my family home in Kobe to Fukui to farm. When I moved to Tokyo on joining the company, I naturally chose a town along a river. When I go shopping or take walks, I often walk along the riverside.

The video of lightning I shot from the office balcony, I still look back on now and then. It really is cool.
